It answers for an archetype shorter than the bar it is placed in, so the built-in archetypes — written beat by beat against the four-beat bar generateDrums accepts — are unaffected by it; a caller's archetype that writes fewer beats is where it decides anything. Most figures read naturally when held, but a half-time gesture is bar-long and stops there.

Beats are indexed from the start of the bar. A beat with no entry is silent, which is how the sparse archetypes leave the earlier beats to the groove.
